Women in business, a segment dedicated to women running businesses in the natural hair and beauty industry all over the world. In this post, we interviewed Nigerian natural hair content creator and businesswoman, Ramat onu Tracy Owolabi who shares more about her business Ramimystique.
IHB: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN NATURAL AND WHEN DID YOUR NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY BEGIN?
RAMI: I have been natural for 2 years and months. My natural hair journey began in October 2018. I used a hair relaxer last May 2017 and transition then big chopped October 2018.
IHB: TAKE US THROUGH YOUR NATURAL HAIR ROUTINE, HOW DOES YOUR WEEKLY/MONTHLY HAIR ROUTINE LOOK LIKE?
RAMI: My weekly hair routine involves; moisturizing daily if I am not protective style. I spritz my hair firstly then go in with a leave-in conditioner then I seal with Shea butter or any available butter I have.
-I wash my hair once in 2 weeks depending on the volume of products I use in my hair.
My monthly routine involves : doing a protein treatment once a month .
My weekly routine is as follows below -Sunday – moisturize and seal. Monday- Daily moisturize and seal. Tuesday-Daily moisturizes and seal. Wednesday- co-wash, deep condition, moisturize, and seal. Thursday – moisturize and seal in. Friday – moisturize and seal Saturday – detangle, wash, and treatment day .
I also make natural products such as guava paste and moringa. Monthly- I cleanse with a clarifying shampoo. I pre-poo first, do special treatment with henna, tea rinse, hot oil, or extra moisture treatment. (banana, avocado, egg and honey hair mask ) to maintain my hair health. – I trim monthly to reduce and avoid split ends.
IHB: Please tell us about your hair salon Ramimystique, How did you decide to move from being just a natural hair blogger, to actually doing people’s hair?
RAMI: Ramimystique natural hair salon/studio is a hair and makeup solution brand. With over 1 year of operation and a team of professional hair and makeup consultants and stylists. We offer a wide range of beauty services and products. We provide quality hair services, makeup applications along with sales of natural hair products, wig making tools, and makeup products.
just like every other naturalista and mother to natural hair princesses, I had problems with finding a good and gentle stylist to care for my hair and that of my daughters. So, I spent time researching on ways to style our hair. I would spend so much time watching tons of videos on YouTube and natural hair blogs looking for tips and inspirations. I decided to go for a few physical hairstyling courses and that was it! Each time I style my hair or that of my girls, I get a lot of compliments and that was the push I needed. However, it wasn’t until last year March 2019 that ramimystique was birthed and then we added makeup artistry to the services we render and more to be added soon.
IHB: What treatment/hairstyles can one get there and do you sell products as well, what are these tools and products you see?
RAMI: At Ramimystique you get organic hair treatments such as Deep protein treatment and also scalp cleansing with natural ingredients. We sell hair care products such as conditioners, shampoos, combs, hair straighteners, hairdryers , mannequin, tripod stands, natural hair herbs, and products of different brands and working on ours too.
IHB: How does one go about purchasing your products/tools?
RAMI: you can order via Instagram using WhatsApp ( click the link on our bio ) send us a dm .. we don’t have a website for now
IHB: How is it like being a natural in Nigeria, and how would you say the brand Rami natural and Ramimystique is shaping the narrative around natural hair?
RAMI: It’s been a jolly ride .. I love every bit of it. Natural hair is not a new thing in Nigeria. A lot of ladies here are natural. Where ramimystique is located, though, it is still strange to them because they believe in this myth that natural hair is expensive but it’s slowly changing.
IHB: What are your top 3 natural hair essentials?
RAMI: Shea butter, Moisturizer, and Shampoo. I have more but I’ll say these 3 for now. 😂
IHB: What is the biggest advice you could give anyone trying to start a hair salon or a business in the beauty industry, since you do make-up as well?
RAMI: starting small isn’t bad .. just start. You will hit the sky and go beyond it soon. Let your focus be on your business development rather than striving to achieve like those that have been in the business for long as a startup. Be you, be unique 💪🏾
