THE ACTUAL TRUTH ABOUT NATURAL HAIR

Being natural, like many things in life, has its pros and cons. There are some people who are on a natural hair high horse and glorify being natural to an extent beyond comprehension. There are some people who do not have anything great to talk about natural hair and want nothing to do with it. Now, what about the people in the middle? These people are most likely to tell you the truth about having natural hair and what is what we will be getting into in this post.

1.PRODUCTS DO NOT GROW YOUR HAIR

One of the biggest misconceptions about growing natural hair is that all the glory goes to the products that you use. This is not entirely truth because growing your hair is attributed to many other things, like our diet and your routine. Products help in maintain your hair by retaining moisture and keeping your hair clean and looking nice. The growth part of it comes from the nutrients that your body receives and length retention comes from a consistent routine and the right technique.

2.SHRINKAGE IS REAL, BUT IT’S ALRIGHT SIS

The healthier and highly moisturised your hair becomes, the more elastic it becomes. This means that your hair will shrink and sometimes to a point where you can longer stretch to make it appear bigger and longer.

Shrinkage is real when you have natural hair and this can be frustrating because of the knots and tangles that form when your hair is in shrinkage but also because you look like you have a ‘TWA’ and no one believes you when you tell them you’ve got long hair because you’re the only one who has seen it.

The best way to deal with shrinkage is to accept and embrace. Understand that shrinking hair is healthy hair and you will end up enjoy your hair in shrinkage.

3.IT CAN BE VERY EXPENSIVE

Because there is such a limited range of natural hair products, there is also not a wide range options when it comes to the prices that we buy. Most of the products that we are are expensive, forcing us to use bits and pieces of products from different product ranges and brands.

The best thing you can do when it comes to products is knowing your hair and understanding if it needs products that are thick or light in consistency, different ingredients that are good for hair and ingredients that are not good for hair. If you know this information about your hair, you will be able to mix and match when it comes to choosing products that are within your price range and in line with your budget.

4.4C/NATURAL HAIR IS NOT BETTER THAN OTHER TYPES OF HAIR

As I have mentioned above, there are people on a natural hair high horse and look down on black girls who choose to relax their hair or wear wig. Return to your natural hair is choice that you make and it’s perfectly fine to inspire others who want to return natural and maintain others but discriminating against people who don’t wear their natural hair and making them feel like they are committing a crime for not wearing their natural hair is highly problematic. All types of hair are beautiful.

5.PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE EXISTS

It has been found that people with natural hair display the most confidence. However, we cannot ignore the politics attached to wearing natural hair. Black girls are felling pressurized to straighten their hair in order to fit into previously white reserved institutions and are made to feel like they are sub-human for wearing their natural hair. These girls end up internalizing these ideas and think they look ugly in their natural hair and that is not true. You are beautiful and your hair is just as beautiful.

CONCLUSION

Having natural hair can have its challenges but most of these have solutions . You can choose to love and embrace your hair and be on your way to creating your own beauty standards under which you could flourish.
